This traditional, as well as an ancient drink, refreshes instantaneously on a hot summer's day!  Cooling to the body and the jaggery enriches iron too.



Ingredients:

  • Water - 4 cups
  • Jaggery (or) brown sugar - 12-15 tsp
  • Tamarind paste - 1 tsp 
  • Lemon juice - 2 tsp
  • Salt - one pinch
  • Cardamom - 2 pods
  • Ripe yellow cantaloupe - 0.5 cups (optional)

Method:

  • Soak the jaggery in water for sometime
  • Squeeze in the lemon juice and tamarind 
  • Add salt and cardamom powder
  • If using, squeeze in the cantaloupe with fingers into the juices
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature


Tips and Tricks:

  • Squeeze in a few pieces of musk melon into the drink to give it an added twist
  • This is a very cooling drink for the body.  Made especially for the festival 'Raamanavami' (Lord Rama's birthday)
  • A pinch of salt in a sweet drink cuts the amount of sugar/jaggery needed and enhances the flavors
