This traditional, as well as an ancient drink, refreshes instantaneously on a hot summer's day! Cooling to the body and the jaggery enriches iron too.
Ingredients:
- Water - 4 cups
- Jaggery (or) brown sugar - 12-15 tsp
- Tamarind paste - 1 tsp
- Lemon juice - 2 tsp
- Salt - one pinch
- Cardamom - 2 pods
- Ripe yellow cantaloupe - 0.5 cups (optional)
Method:
- Soak the jaggery in water for sometime
- Squeeze in the lemon juice and tamarind
- Add salt and cardamom powder
- If using, squeeze in the cantaloupe with fingers into the juices
- Serve chilled or at room temperature
Tips and Tricks:
- Squeeze in a few pieces of musk melon into the drink to give it an added twist
- This is a very cooling drink for the body. Made especially for the festival 'Raamanavami' (Lord Rama's birthday)
- A pinch of salt in a sweet drink cuts the amount of sugar/jaggery needed and enhances the flavors
