When made in an air fryer, this all-time favorite snack can be enjoyed guilt-free, without compromising on the taste or crunch!  Prepared with barely any oil, this quick treat is great for a cold or rainy evening, along with tea/coffee.

Ingredients:

  • Onions - 2 medium
  • Spring onions - 12-15
  • Besan (gram flour) - 1 cup
  • Rice flour - 0.5 cup
  • Peanuts - 0.25 cup
  • Green chilies - 1 tsp
  • Ajwain - 1 tsp
  • Baking soda - 0.25 tsp
  • Salt
  • Water - 3-4 tbsp
  • Oil - 2 tsp

Method:

  • Roast the peanuts and let cool
  • Slice the onions thinly, lengthwise
  • Chop the spring onions
  • Coarsely crush the peanuts
  • In a bowl, take the gram flour, rice flour, crushed peanuts, green chilies, ajwain, baking soda and salt
  • Add the oil (if using) and mix
  • Add the chopped spring onions and the thinly sliced onions
  • Mix with a gentle hand (no kneading)
  • Add the water gradually tbsp by tbsp and mix with a gentle hand.  Be sure to not knead the dough
  • Set the air fryer to preheat at 380° F (195° C)
  • Brush the air fryer basket with a little oil
  • Lay small lumps of the dough in the basket, making sure to not touch each other.  Doesn't have to be shaped well
  • Spray or drizzle some oil on the top and place the basket in the air fryer
  • Air fry for 12 minutes at 380° F (195° C)
  • Flip the pakodas and air fry at 400° F (200° C) for another 4-6 mins or until desired browning is achieved
  • Serve hot with ketchup or chutney

Tips and Tricks:

  • Thin long slices of onions keep the texture of the pakodas soft
  • Rice flour makes them crisp
  • Baking soda keeps them fluffy, avoiding hard pakodas
  • Adding oil into the dough keeps them moist and not too dry
